We had a lot of trouble with bladder stones with our Hannah (a Cairn terrier), including an instances of acute retention which could have killed her, but a change of diet to a bland and natural one seem to solve the problem on a life long basis. Most vets seem to favour a change of diet.

For a description of Hannah's problems and details of her case history please see -

Underground Dog Fences have evolved over the past 25 years. The expensive and somewhat ugly chain link dog fences have fallen by the wayside in favor of the new electronic dog fences, which use invisible radio waves. Dogs have a habit of jumping over or digging under chain link dog fences or other solid barrier dog fences. The new Underground dog fences have shown themselves to be not only an effective pet training product but safe and humane as well. The newer dog fences are also available in contain and train combinations as well as wireless dog fence versions, creating a safe barrier.

I recently ordered Frontline Plus from a web site that turned out to be based in Australia. (The cost of the Frontline was in dollars and the dog weight ranges were in pounds.) Anyway, I told my veterinarian what I had done and that I had gotten an extremely good deal on it ($105/12 mo. and only $4 shipping). She suggested I check with Frontline, to make sure they recommend this version of their product for use in the U.S. I did so, and got some strange information from them.

I was told by the Frontline "vet tech" NO, they do NOT recommend the Australian version of their product for use in the U.S. (He didn't say why.) He said that they recommend that we get the product only from our vet. I asked why, if they want us to obtain it only from a vet, they make their product available at a bunch of online stores, for a much cheaper price. He said that they don't know where the online stores get the Frontline they sell. Hmmmm, I may be stupid, but I really think that if online stores were selling a product that looks exactly like Frontline, that the Frontline folks would be lining up their lawyers.

We also give our dog Heartgard and were told by a previous vet that if we purchase the Heartgard from an online source, that Heartgard would not stand behind it, should our dog actually get heartworms.

Can anyone shed some light on this bizarro situation?
