Prevent Puppy Jumping From Becoming A Behavior Problem Later
Obedience training should be part of your new pup’s life right from the beginning. A very important basic command he should learn right away is the “off” command. You can use this command not only to prevent a dog jumping up, but also to keep him off the couch, countertops, and to prevent him jumping at the door. It’s much easier to teach him this command, while he’s young, so don’t wait.
There are three steps to teaching your pup to “off” command.
1. As soon as he jumps up on a person (or the furniture), say “OFF!” right away.
2. Snarl at him with an open mouth, showing him your teeth, and making direct eye contact. It’s not necessary to growl. An open-mouthed silent snarl is how adult canines tell puppies to calm down, and your pup will instinctively understand what you’re telling him.
3. Repeat this every time he attempts to jump up, until you don’t have to say it twice. When you see that he’s stopping himself from jumping, praise him.
This exercise also establishes you as the pack leader. In the wild, subordinate canines would never jump on the leader, because it means that the subordinate is challenging the leader. The alpha dog doesn’t tolerate this, and you shouldn’t either.
Everyone in your family must also use this command. Your new pup needs to understand that everyone in the family ranks above him to prevent dog behavior problems later on.
Stop Dog Jumping On Visitors
Visitors can sometimes be a problem. Some people think it’s cute to have a dog jump up on them. Explain to your visitors that you don’t allow him to jump on anyone.
If you’re expecting company, put your pup on a leash. When your guests arrive, if he jumps up, move quickly to step on the leash. This prevents him from jumping, and also pulls on his collar, which serves to correct his behavior. Alternatively, hold onto the leash. When he jumps, say “off,” and firmly pull the leash to the side, which forces him to put his feet back on the ground. Timing is important; pull his leash as you say “off” so that he learns that “off” means “no jumping.” In either case, praise him as soon as all four feet are on the ground.
Your visitors may think you’re being too hard on him, but you’re not. Establishing good habits when he’s young will prevent dog behavior problems later on in life.
Remember that your whole family must be in agreement when training him. It’s impossible for him to learn good habits if some people are encouraging the very behavior you’re trying to avoid. Having Fun With Your Puppy
When your puppy has completed his basic training you can start to have fun whilst teaching him new tricks. Teaching him to sit and stay is entertaining for him and for you. There are so many ways in which you can practice this position, for example; let him see you hide a treat or toy behind his bed. The puppy should remain seated when you are hiding the object and then say Where is it? as you wander around the room. Then tell your puppy to go find. Initially he may not understand what he is supposed to do so help him, but make sure that he finds it. When he does praise him and if the object was a treat let him eat it.
With the puppy sitting down, walk a short distance away from him. Show him an object such as a Frisbee or toy and then throw it to him saying catch. To start you should not throw the object into the air; just throw it to him at mouth level so that he does catch it.
As your puppy learns more sitting and staying activities you can try placing something on his nose such as a dog biscuit or treat. Your puppy may think this is a cue to eat something but hold his head firmly until he has held the treat in position for a second or two. Gently push his chin up so that the treat is thrown upwards and at the same time say take it. Practice this a few times and you will find you’re your puppy will throw the treat in the air himself on the take it command.
Teaching your puppy to shake hands is easy. Just tapping the back of his paw is usually enough to make him lift it. If he doesn’t lift his paw then you lift it and say Paw. When he has mastered the handshake you can lift both of his paws so that he is seated in an upright position with the word Beg or Sit up. Later you will even be able to make him wave to you, simply by standing back and saying Paw so that he raises the paw and then waving your hand and saying Goodbye.
Your dog can learn any number of tricks using simple command words. Dogs are intelligent and just like humans they can become bored so the more tricks you teach him, the better. When your dog is alone, if he has learned lots of practice exercises he will do them rather than chew your shoes or furniture.
All dogs love rolling on their backs and having their tummies tickled. Find something comfortable for your puppy to roll onto, walk toward him and roll him over onto his back saying roll over. It may be that he will automatically roll over in which case catch him as he rolls with the roll over command. In no time he will be rolling over whenever you tell him to. When he gets it right praise him with Good boy or Good dog.
Just as children do, puppies enjoy playing hide and seek. However, unlike children your puppy will sniff you out. To play this game crouch down beside your puppy and let him watch as you crawl into your hiding place. After a few seconds, call him with Come. Repeat this game several times and make a huge fuss of him every time he finds you. Make it easy for him the first few times and when he is able to find you right away take the game to a higher level. As time progresses you will be able to hide in places without him watching where you go and where it won’t be easy for him to pick up your scent. Each time make sure that he finds you because if the game isn’t fun he will lose interest in it. Also give him a treat every time he succeeds in finding you to keep him motivated,
As your dog grows older he will understand far more of what you say than you can imagine but in the early days it is best to stick with short and simple words.

Enema Treatment For Dogs
Although there are a number of reasons why your dog may need an enema, you should never do this without initially seeking advice from your vet. An enema may be the best method to administer necessary drugs or may be required if the dog is dehydrated through sickness and/or diarrhea. Usually, there are different products available according to the size of the dog. However it is important to keep in mind the fact that the volume of the liquid at one go does not work to hydrate in one go, but continuous intake of liquids is necessary. If your dog is constipated, and laxatives have failed, an enema may be the best solution to the problem. If you are certain that an enema is required proceed in the following manner:-
For smaller dogs you will need 25 – 30cc plastic syringe but for larger breeds an enema bag with a rubber nozzle will be necessary. The volume of liquid to be administered is not as important as getting some liquid into the dogs system, particularly if the dog is dehydrated.
The water that is to be used should not be hot but should be heated to body temperature (101 – 102ºF). For smaller dogs add a few grains of sea salt, a few lemon drops and a pinch of potassium chloride to 2-3 tablespoons of the water or for larger dogs – a pint of water. If the enema is being administered only for constipation you will not need potassium chloride or salt. If dehydration exists in your dog you will need to administer the enema every four hours, but make up each dose individually just before you are going to administer it.
Make absolutely certain that the mixture is not too hot, place it into the syringe or enema bag and use vegetable oil to lubricate the end of the syringe or nozzle. It is best to perform this exercise in a sink, bathtub or outside as the dog will want to relieve himself very quickly afterwards. Do not try to perform this task alone, you will need someone to assist in holding the dog and keeping his head facing in the opposite direction. Lift the dogs tail, insert the nozzle or syringe into the rectum and release all of the mixture via gently squeezing the enema bag or pressing the plunger of the syringe. Take the nozzle out and release the dog. The enema works because the colon absorbs the liquid and this is particularly useful when dealing with a dog which is very dehydrated. If the dog appears to have been adversely affected by the enema, call your vet as quickly as possible.
The above treatment should bring your dogs health back to normal and he will certainly feel much better. Just like a family member, your pets well being is equally important and I am sure this will help your dog get relief. However, consult a vet if things are severe or you find no change in the situation.
